The US FDA approved Cimzia (certolizumab pegol) injection for treatment of adults with non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA), a type of inflammatory arthritis. This is the first fda approved treatment for nr-axSpA.
Nr-axSpA causes inflammation in the spine and other symptoms, and has no visible damage seen on x-rays; therefore is referred to as non-radiographic.
Cimzia is currently used to treat certain autoimmune disorders including Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis.
