Influenza activity, particularly caused by the A(H3N2) virus, remains elevated across the US. The CDC has released a health advisory, reminding clinicians to keep influenza top of mind when diagnosing patients with respiratory illness.
The report contains several recommendations:
- All hospitalized, severely ill, and high-risk patients with suspected or confirmed influenza should be treated with antivirals
- Antivirals in non-high risk patients with uncomplicated influenza
- FDA-approved antiviral medications for influenza season 2018-2019
- Timing of treatment and implications for patient evaluation, treatment, and testing
